I’m Captain Randy Cribbs, a Chassahowitzka fishing guide.
The Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge is a paradise for nature and wildlife adventures on Florida’s most scenic rivers. Accessible only by flats boat or canoe, the refuge is one of Florida’s most pristine waters and known as the “Breeding Grounds of the Gulf”. The Chassahowitzka river is spring fed and bordered by the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife refuge which was established in 1943 as a winter preserve for migratory water birds. The many Chassahowitzka estuaries, islands, salt marshes and coastal swamps are protected and managed by several agencies for the protection of preserving Old Florida atmosphere. I grew up here, living on the river in a houseboat with my folks and have been a fishing guide on the Chassahowitzka waters for over 25 years.
I now live on John’s Island at the mouth of the Chassahowitzka River in Citrus County, in the city of Homosassa with many native plants and animals that can be spotted from the island. A variety of wildlife may be seen while sitting on the front porch enjoying the day. You may wake up to river otters playing in front of the cabin or you might spend the morning watching ospreys, great blue herons or wood storks scavenging for food. Or watch a family of manatees feeding on the grasses from the river and gulf. Some days you get lucky and see all of them. Catch the morning bite of world class Redfish, Trout and many more other species and then run out to the scallop grounds(when in season) for low tide and fill your bucket full. All to be back in time to enjoy a dinner feast by the camp fire on the Island. The huge fish that run in our waters are, Red fish, Trout, Snook, Flounder, Tarpon, Cobia as well as more Scallops and Blue Crabs than you’ve ever had access to.
The cabin has two bedrooms, an inside full bath, outside shower, hot water and AC if needed. A constant breeze flows through the cabin with a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Mexico from almost every room. A screened in front porch to enjoy the sunset and relax with your favorite beverage. All you will need to bring are your personal items and any beverage you prefer. You will be staying with me in my cabin in your own room.
Thank you and I can’t wait to take you on the fishing trip of a lifetime,
Capt’n Randy Cribbs
Scallop season is from July 1st through September 24th. I have them located, come and get you some! We normally get scallops at low tide and stop and catch a couple of Redfish on the way back.

Wake up in the bed. Take 47 steps and get in the boat. Grab your pole and hang on!
Your complete comfort is our goal at John’s Island. After a day spent out on the water with Chassahowitzka fishing guide Captain Randy Cribbs on some of the best beds in the world, you will find yourself relaxing in your cabin watching the beautiful evening sunsets while listening to the birds sing. Then wake back up the next morning to fish the best Scallop, Reds, and Trout waters in the world!
This is a Private Island.
The cabin is on a private island and overlooks the Chassahowitzka Game Wildlife Refuge. There are no cars pulling up in the middle of the night to interrupt your sleep. This is one of the best get a ways for newly weds in the USA. It is modern and completely furnished. You are actually living on the water so it gets pretty cool at night. Most never turn the A/C on when they come out. The kitchen has all the necessary appliances (refrigerator, range stove, microwave, toaster, & drip coffee maker); as well as utensils, a modern bathroom inside with shower, and comfortable bedrooms with all bedding and linen provided. We also have an outside shower and an outhouse if you want the best view while your reading in the world. Also, either a charcoal or gas grill is located outside. Some of you will be happy to learn that there aren’t any mosquitoes on John’s island. Not enough for them to eat so they don’t come out to the island. Well, we did have one last summer or maybe it was the summer before last. I can’t remember exactly. I took a picture to prove it was out here. You can barely make it out in the last picture below. Trust me, that thing was there.
